NYS Fostering

Fostering is a joy but can sometimes also be a challenge. This can be especially true for those working with Great Pyrenees. We are providing these training tips for those who are new to the breed or those feel it’s a good time to brush up on their training skills.

Start by reading our Training and Behavior page for the the basics of how to train a Great Pyrenees. To manage specific issues, refer to the links below. Do your homework and you will feel more confident about training your Great Pyrenees—something your dog will recognize and respect immediately.

Please let us know if you need the help of a professional behaviorist who knows the breed well. We’ll be happy to arrange a training session if it’s needed.

The selected links in our training PDF were prepared for fosters. These are our expectations for training dogs in foster homes but serve as a good reference for other dogs as well.

The “Dog to English” Translation Chart reproduced below should serve as a helpful reminder for canine body language.  Being aware of your dog’s body language is an effective training tool. It can help to encourage certain desirable behaviors and discourage negatives ones. Click the image below to view an enlarged PDF version.
